Things To Do in Mancos, CO
A statutory town in Montezuma County, CO, Mancos had a population of nearly 1,200 as of 2020. It is located in southwestern Colorado, at the base of Mesa Verde National Park, holding the trademark “Gateway to Mesa Verde”. The area around it is a rangeland and mountains, and it is full of a variety of outdoor recreational activities. It is considered the commercial center for east Montezuma County and also considered at one time for the county seat. Both State Highway 184 and U.S. Highway 160 serve the town.
The town was originally founded in 1894, near the site where early Spanish explorers first crossed the Mancos River. Originally, the Old Spanish Trail trade route had passed through Mancos from 1829 well into the 1850s. It was part of the original Ute Reservation of 1868, Mancos was part of the San Juan Cession of 1873, and cattle ranchers had begun to settle the area in the 1870s, bringing cattle to the mining camps of the La Plata and San Juan ranges. Today, the boundary of the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation is about 6 miles south of town.
The area has a lot of beautiful and breathtaking Western landscapes to explore, located just 6 miles east of the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. The area’s historical buildings include the Columbine Bar, one of the oldest operating bars in all of Colorado. Main Street cattle drives, quaint shops, and the rustic atmosphere healthily maintain that Western feeling alive, the wave of artisans who left their mark on the town in the colorful murals and more setting Mancos apart.
