Things To Do in Telluride, CO
Once a silver mining camp, Telluride now serves as the county seat and the largest town in San Miguel County, situated in the southwestern part of Colorado. Named after the valuable compounds of tellurium, a metalloid element forming natural tellurides, the town’s most notable varieties were associated with gold and silver. Despite the absence of gold telluride minerals near Telluride, the region yielded crucial compounds rich in copper, lead, zinc, silver, and various gold-containing ores.
Gold’s first discovery in Colorado was near present-day Denver, which set off the Pike’s Peak gold rush of 1858. Many who came to the state area spread out to seek gold and silver all over the territory. The Smuggler gold vein above Telluride, alongside the placer gold in the San Miguel River, was discovered in 1875. This led to John Fallon making the first claim in Marshal Basin above Telluride that same year, leading to the early settlement of Telluride. It was initially named Columbia, but confusion with Columbia, CA, led it to have its name changed by the post office in 1887.
Nestled within a box canyon surrounded by dense, towering mountains and cliffs, the town offers breathtaking scenery. Bridal Veil Falls graces the canyon’s head, adding to the area’s beauty. A complimentary gondola links the town to Mountain Village at the ski area’s base. Remnants of past mining operations dot the hillside, bearing witness to the area’s history. Renowned for its winter ski resort and slopes, the region also hosts a vibrant festival lineup during the summer, highlighted by events like the Hot Air Balloon Festival in early June.
